Investing in the Dream

As Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Winter Games, Whistler was in a unique position. It had a tremendous opportunity, matched by an equal measure of responsibility, to represent the province and the nation, and showcase the country to the world. Whistler also recognized the value of hosting the Games as a vehicle for deriving sustainable economic, environmental and social benefits for the community and its residents.

For Whistler, the benefits of 2010 Winter Games will last a lifetime. Whistler residents and visitors have been left with more than 20 tangible legacies, including Olympic-quality sports facilities, the Whistler Medals Plaza, the Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood, and many more. In fact the Games were a catalyst to accelerate Whistler toward our community vision to become the premier resort community as we move toward sustainability.

To capitalize on this opportunity, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), worked with its many partners, and took a strategic approach that allowed Whistler to:

  • Effectively leverage Games-related opportunities for the long-term benefit of the community.
  • Successfully deliver on its Games commitments in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Collaborate with and support its partners in the delivery of extraordinary Games.

Investing in the Dream identifies the benefits and anticipated costs for the RMOW associated with staging the Games.
