The Resort Municipality of Whistler began operation of a new municipal composting facility in November 2008. This facility composts biosolids from Whistler's wastewater treatment, residential and commercial organic waste, and wood waste. The closed system composter will divert waste from the landfill, effectively treat Whistler's biosolids, provide an opportunity for businesses and residents to compost organic waste, and produce a number of high quality soil amendments for sale. Read more .

Residents are now able to drop off separated organic waste at the garbage, recycling, and composting depots:
1. 8001 Nester's Road (north end of Whistler)
2. Function Junction (south end of Whistler)

The depots are managed by Carney's waste on behalf of the municipality.

The following materials are accepted for residential drop-off:
  • Fruits, vegetables, plant stalks, peelings
  • All food scraps, bones, meat, fish, dairy, nuts, bakery discards, nuts, pasta, cereal, sauces
  • Flowers and houseplants
  • Coffee ground with filter and tea bags
  • Biodegradable cornstarch containers
  • Wood stir sticks
  • Soiled paper napkins
  • Sawdust, woodchips, and shavings (no cedar)
The following materials are not accepted for residential composting:
  • Plastic bags*, wax paper, glass*, metal*, foil*, styrofoam, cellophane products*
  • Rubber or plastic products*
  • Waxed paper containers (milk cartons, coffee cups)
  • Grease, cooking oils and liquids
  • Microwave popcorn bags*, pizza boxes, corrugated cardboard*
  • Fruit or vegetable labels
  • Paper egg cartons*
  • Tetrapaks** (juice boxes)
  • Diapers
*    Place these items in recycling bins
**  Return these items for deposit refund

The following materials must be delivered directly to the Waste Transfer Station on Callaghan Valley Road:
  • Yard waste, including grass clippings, leaves, small twigs, and hedge trimmings
  • Fireplace ash
  • Clean wood waste (branches over 2" diameter; clean logs free of rocks; wood without nails, screws, glue, stain, or chemical treatment; chipped tree trimmings; clean sawdust, shavings, wood chips, or hog fuel) ***Tipping fees will be determined by the RMOW according to current market rates.
Carney's Waste Systems is responsible for operating the residential recycling, garbage, and composting depots on behalf of the Resort Municipality of Whistler, as well as the municipal Composting Facility and Waste Transfer Station and private commercial waste collection services. Visit Carney's website for more information.

Commercial businesses must hire a private waste management contractor to arrange for garbage, recycling, and composting collection.  With lower tipping fees for organic waste than garbage, businesses may enjoy cost savings, while they move towards better waste management practices.

Did you know?
In 2007, Whistler's production of landfill waste was more than 600 kg per person. Whistler's new composting facility has the potential to divert more than 5,000 tonnes (five million kg) of organic material annually (the equivalent of more than 20% of our total waste) from the landfill.

By working together, Whistler is moving toward becoming a "zero waste" community.
