Electric Vehicle Charging Stations installed at Whistler Conference Centre underground lot

January 11, 2010 ... With a nod to the future, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has installed four new electric vehicle charging stations in the first level of the Whistler Conference Centre underground parking lot.

"The charging stations are a small step on a much larger journey toward sustainability; however they demonstrate that Whistler is continuously willing to explore and support new opportunities for progressive energy and emissions management," said Mayor Ken Melamed.

Millennium Place to become Whistler Media House and Norway House for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games

January 4, 2009 ... Maurice Young Millennium Place (MY Place) is gearing up to become the home for two distinct operations during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games — Whistler Media House and Norway House.

As of today (January 4), organizers will begin preparations for Games-time operations. Tenants and regular user groups of MY Place including the Youth Centre, Teddy Bear Daycare, Church on the Mountain and Whistler Village Church are being temporarily relocated and will continue to operate during the Games period.

Three-hour parking limit at Meadow Park Sports Centre

December 23, 2009 .. To ensure the Meadow Park Sports Centre Parking lot is available to the community during the 2010 Winter Games, a three-hour parking limit will be strictly enforced beginning Friday, January 1.

“We will be managing the parking lot so the community is able to use it during the Games,” said Roger Weetman, Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) manager of recreation services. “Meadow Park Sports Centre will be fully open for public use during the entire 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Whistler Public Library to become Whistler Canada Olympic House

December 22 2009 ... The Whistler Public Library will be home to Whistler Canada Olympic House during the 2010 Winter Games and facility programming is in the process of being finalized.

The facility will be transformed into a friendly meeting place for Canadian Olympic athletes, their family, and friends. The facility will also play host to international dignitaries, tourism representatives, media, government partners and other special guests. Guests will have the opportunity to use the facility to watch events, celebrate, hold business meetings, while learning about Whistler and attending a variety of special events.

Lost Lake Cross Country trails open with good conditions

December 22, 2009 ... Lost Lake Cross Country trails are open with good conditions thanks to recent snowfall of over 30 centimetres in 48 hours.

Lost Lake trails will be open all winter with regular operations including during the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. For the month of February, skiers can purchase a $25 Commuter Pass, which provides access to the commuter route from Meadow Park Sports Centre into Whistler Village.

Rainbow residents receive an early Christmas present

December 22, 2009 ... Rainbow residents can now safely board the bus at a temporary bus turn-around, just in time for full winter service that began on December 18. The temporary stop, located at the intersection of the Valley Trail and Bear Paw Trail just south of the stop sign at Crazy Canuck Drive, was completed on December 17 and will allow the Whistler Transit system buses to safely enter the neighbourhood.

The Resort Municipality (RMOW), BC Transit, Whistler Transit Ltd. and Whistler Rainbow Developments came together to develop and implement a temporary bus service plan for this winter. A permanent bus turn-around is planned for the site once road construction is complete- anticipated in 2010.

Whistler Council endorses UN International Year of Biodiversity, creates own challenge

December 21, 2009 ... The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has become a local government partner in the United Nations 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, which is a unique opportunity to increase understanding of the vital role that biodiversity plays in sustaining life on Earth.

Whistler Council also signed on to Countdown 2010, which is one of many International Year of Biodiversity initiatives. The RMOW has committed to help reach the 2010 Biodiversity Target, which is to "achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on Earth.”

Whistler Medals Plaza turned over to VANOC

December 16, 2009 ... The Whistler Medals Plaza has been turned over to the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) and installation of temporary event infrastructure for the 2010 Winter Games is underway. "Turning over the Whistler Medals Plaza is a major milestone in the completion of this incredible legacy for Whistler," said Mayor Ken Melamed.

Meadow Park Sport Centre pool temporarily closed

Meadow Park Sport Centre pool is temporarily closed for Monday, December 14 due to a water main break. The pool will reopen on Tuesday.

Spruce Grove Field House handed over to 2010 Winter Games Security Forces

December 8, 2009 ... Security forces for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games have found a home in Whistler at Spruce Grove Park. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Resort Municipality of Whistler have signed an agreement for use of the field house, parking lots and a portion of the sports fields effective December 1 until March 31.

"In less than 80 days, Whistler will be welcoming the world and we recognize the importance of the support from RCMP and Games-time security forces," said Mayor Ken Melamed. “These respected professionals will provide the essential conditions for a successful games and a safe environment for the athletes.”
