Complete election results are available at www.whistler.ca and Civic Info BC.
An estimated 54.8 per cent of eligible Whistler voters cast a ballot in the 2011 Local General Election. Overall votes increased from the 2008 Local General Election. A total of 3952 Whistler residents voted in the 2011 Local General Election, compared with 2903 in the 2008.
A total of 230 ballots were cast at the November 9 advanced poll compared to 176 votes at the first advanced poll in 2008. The second advanced voting opportunity held on November 12 saw 362 ballots cast, in comparison to 208 votes cast in the November 2008 second advanced poll. A total of 592 votes were cast in this year’s two advanced polls. Approximately 397 mail ballots were processed in time for the close of the 2011 Local General Election by the Chief Election Officer.
In the past, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has typically held two special voting opportunities in West Vancouver for non-resident property owners located in the Lower Mainland. No special voting opportunities were organized for the 2011 election in West Vancouver as the introduction of mail ballot voting provided Whistler’s non-resident property owners with the alternative to voting in person on general voting day.
Mail ballot voting was legislated by the Province of British Columbia in time for the last general election and was passed through the Provincial Legislature on March 31, 2008. Out of the 189 local governments in B.C., 37 instituted mail ballot voting in 2008. Since the last election, RMOW staff consulted with these B.C. municipalities to discuss the costs, pros and cons of implementing it. This is the first election where Whistler offered mail ballot voting to its constituents.
