Cheakamus Community Forest Open House

November 3, 2011 - 3:00pm - 6:00pm
Venue:
Whistler Public Library
The public is invited to provide input into potential areas of old forest for protection, and to review the 2011 harvesting activities and the new draft of the Ecosystem Based Management Plan. There will be a presentation at 4:00.

The Old Forest Plan builds on the recently updated Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) plan, completed in partnership with Ecotrust Canada, which identifies all the sensitive ecosystems in the area. The ...EBM report reviews existing protected areas in the Whistler Landscape Unit including the CCF, and considers what additional protection is required to provide an adequate base for ecosystem protection. The CCF is now asking the public’s input on additional areas of old forest that should be considered for protection.

The CCF is a joint venture between the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the Squamish Nation and the Lil’wat Nation. A fundamental goal of the CCF is to maintain and protect ecological integrity and manage the land in accordance with the best current thinking for ecosystem –based management, while achieving the harvest target, currently set at 20,000 m3 per year.
