The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) invites members of the public to provide input on proposed zoning changes, as prepared by the Council-appointed Illegal Space Task Force, to address illegal residential floor areas that do not comply with current zoning or safety regulations.

The proposed zoning changes would affect most single family and duplex properties throughout the municipality.

  • First, crawl and void spaces definitions would be modified to prevent illegal alterations for use after occupancy permits are issued.
  • Second, a new definition for a basement-like floor area that would be excluded from the gross floor area.   A property owner would then have the opportunity to use this space for any use as permitted by the property’s zoning; subject to permit and BC Building Code approval and other land use regulations for the property.

This Open House is your opportunity to review and provide input to the Task Force and RMOW staff on how the proposed changes apply to your property and neighbourhood.

To learn more and provide your feedback, please attend the March 2 Open House or visit whistler.ca/illegalspaces to submit an online comment sheet before March 6, 2012.
