Karuizawa, Japan - Whistler, Canada

High-school students from Whistler and Junior High School students from Karuizawa, Japan have been enjoying their cross-cultural relationship since it was first established in 1999. That was the year that Whistler and Karuizawa became the 67th pair of Canadian/Japanese Sister Cities, and, we might add, a formidable pair indeed! Both cities boast year-round tourism, a multitude of outdoor recreational activities, and most importantly, names with w’s in them.

The Sister City Exchange program is an exciting opportunity for youth to experience other cultures, while acting as an ambassador for their own community. This year, from March 19 to the 26, 10 students from Karuizawa immersed themselves in the Whistler living experience and spent time with several Whistler Secondary youth ambassadors. Thanks to the generous support of local businesses and volunteers from Whistler Secondary, our guests had a great time going skiing, zip-trekking, riding the Peak2Peak, rock climbing at the Core, gold panning at the Britannia Mine, eating at local restaurants, and visiting the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre.

“The students truly enjoyed their stay, and tears were shed upon their departure,” said Stephanie Coughlin, RMOW community project coordinator.

In the end, both Whistler and Karuizawa youth expanded their awareness of the Global Village and cultural ties were strengthened.
