WASTE MANAGEMENT IN WHISTLER
Whistler is moving toward its goal of "zero waste," a whole systems approach to waste management planning, which takes into account the flow of products from design and development to resource extraction, manufacturing, consumption, and, finally disposal.

A zero waste approach aims to minimize consumption of materials in the upstream stages of production and usage, and maximize the recovery of discards in the downstream stages of materials recovery.

Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Solid Waste Management Plan
The British Columbia Ministry of Environment requires that all regional districts develop and submit a Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) for approval. Whistler's waste management strategies are aligned with the policy recommendations of the Squamish-Lilloet Regional District's (SLRD) Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP).

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) updated their 1999 Solid Waste Management Plan and this plan is now under review by the Ministry of Environment.

The new plan provides a framework to support increased recycling and composting, and to manage the disposal of residual waste in the region. The SLRD's five-year goal is to reduce waste bound for landfills by another 30 per cent over 2006 levels in an environmental and cost-efficient manner. Upon full implementation, the SLRD will have decreased the amount of waste disposed per capita by two-thirds from 1990.

Whistler2020 Materials and Solid Waste Strategy
The Whistler2020 Materials and Solid Waste Strategy addresses how to meet Whistler's need for material supply and disposal, while minimizing environmental impacts. This strategy focusses primarily on the procurement of appropriate products (as most products are not produced locally in Whistler), as well as on their use and disposal. The strategy offers upstream solutions, encourages the sustainable use of materials, and supports appropriate waste management systems.

Whistler2020 is our community's comprehensive long-term vision of success and sustainability in the future, as well as Whistler's plan and process for achieving this vision. It is based on a progressive and meaningful framework for community-based engagement in decision-making.
