“Change is easier than you think” EnviroFest 2012
Residents and visitors are invited to discover that “change is easier than you think” at EnviroFest 2012, September 15, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Whistler Olympic Plaza.
Hosted by the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), EnviroFest 2012 offers a wide range of free family-oriented activities including interactive displays, a celebrity fashion show, music, performers, workshops and special children’s fun. EnviroFest 2012 promises something for everyone to enjoy and plenty of ideas for action.
“The natural environment is one of Whistler’s most important assets,” said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. “EnviroFest provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the individual and collective efforts that we make to sustain our natural environment. Making changes is not difficult and every single action does make a difference.”
The family-friendly outdoor fair at Whistler Olympic Plaza will showcase “change in action” by providing examples of everyday changes and products that make a difference. Kids will love the face painting, the EnviroFest passport adventure and games that make learning about the environment fun. Starting at 11 a.m. kids can pick up their EnviroFest passports and start their adventure.
New this year, Day Lot 4 will be transformed into a remote Re-Use-It and Re-Build-It Centre. Clean out the house and bring in your used goods. Staff will be onsite with a truck to accept donations of household goods and recycling. Donate items in good working condition including electronics (not working and working), furniture, clothing, dishes, linens, children’s items, bottles and cans, dishes, sporting goods and building supplies. Visit whistler.ca/envirofest2012 for a complete list.
EnviroFest 2012 will also feature the following exciting FREE workshops aimed to empower Whistler residents with the information and inclination to make choices with the natural environment in mind. Space is limited so register online today at whistler.ca/envirofest2012 or email dsavage@whistler.ca.
- Soap-Making Workshop – 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
- Re-Build-It Up-cycling Workshop – 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Along with interactive displays from BC Hydro, Carney’s, the RMOW, BC Transit and more, EnviroFest 2012 includes the first ever Re-Use-It Celebrity Fashion Show. Sponsored by the Re-Use-It Centre, local Whistler celebrities will model the latest recycled fashions to DJ beats that are available for a fraction of the cost at the Re-Use-It Centre. The fashion show will repeat at the top of every hour, starting at 11 a.m.
Short Skirt Theatre will also perform a series of short skits designed to entertain and educate adults and children alike about environmentally friendly choices offered in the community.
EnviroFest 2012 aims to make itself as sustainable as possible through carbon offsetting, recycling and water management strategies including “a pack it in pack it out” policy that exhibitors must follow. Pedal power will be generated by teams of “watt-riders” who will power EnviroFest 2012 by pedaling with their back wheels resting on a spinning mini generator. Jump on a bike and get involved. The energy from the pedaling will be converted to power the lights and the DJ music. A kids’ bike will also be on-hand for young peddlers to demo.

The remaining energy used to power EnviroFest 2012 is bullfrogpowered with 100% green electricity. This means that Bullfrog Power will inject green power onto the BC electricity grid to match the amount of electricity used by this event. Bullfrog’s green power is sourced exclusively from wind power producers who meet or exceed the federal government's EcoLogoM standard for renewable energy.
