Letters to the Editor

Sorted by date, this section outlines letters to the editor related to municipal programs and services.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to clarify and correct information presented in both Nancy Wilhelm-Morden’s column and David Buzzard’s letter to the Editor in your June 30, 2011 issue.

I am writing to respond to comments made in Nancy Wilhelm-Morden’s column of June 16.  Nancy was a municipal councilor for 10 years and I continually find some of her comments unacceptable.  Nancy was on the HR Committee of Council and was part of the council that was involved in the negotiations for the current staff agreement (that runs through 2011) that she criticizes.

In response to Zbigniew Ciura’s letter to the editor “Idle Free Campaign,” I would like to provide some insight into the importance of the Idle-Free Campaign.

I am writing to clarify certain comments about the 2010-2014 Five-Year Financial Plan (budget) as stated in Nancy Wilhelm-Morden’s column in the Dec. 3, 2009 edition of The Question.

“the new iteration…is higher than the one six months ago.  How come?”

Approximately $1 million was moved forward from the 2009 budget for expenditures now being spent in early 2010.  In addition, nearly $3 million in grants were announced for external funding of 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games expenditures.

Dear Editor,

I would like to provide some background and clarification in response to Mr. Allan Crawford’s letter regarding the proposed 2010 harvesting plans for the Cheakamus Community Forest (CCF).

Dear Editor,

I am writing to clarify some information presented in Nancy Wilhelm-Morden’s column in the April 9 issue.

In reference to the development of the budget and the tax rate, the column states “direction came from the blue-ribbon panel.”  In fact, council has been in detailed budget discussions for four months and is ultimately responsible for the finances of the community.

To the editor:

A recent opinion piece in the Pique, “Sustainability at Work,” exemplifies the saying ”Never let the facts get in the way of a good story,” and makes inferences about the Celebration Plaza and VANOC, which I believe require clarification.

The article infers that VANOC effectively dictated to Whistler where the medals should be given out, forcing us to cut down trees at Celebration Plaza, and that Whistler was left out of crucial discussions, as the VANOC Board took measures to protect the Games from going into deficit.

Dear Editor,

On behalf of Whistler Fire Rescue I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to three local businesses and agencies that went above and beyond to assist six people who where displaced by a structure fire in Alpine on January 29, 2009. The Executive Inn, Whistler Blackcomb Staff Housing and Whistler Community Social Services went out of their way to help our team during the ESS response and made sure that the displaced tenants had accommodation. Thank you for your outstanding service to our community.

Sincerely,

Fire Chief Rob Whitton
