Statements

Occasionally, RMOW staff and Council are asked to comment on municipal affairs. The following statements clarify the RMOW’s position on a range of programs, services and time-sensitive concerns in our community.

January 9, 2012 - The continuation of the trial between Rainbow Country Estates Ltd. and the RMOW, to determine interest and costs arising from the Judgement setting the value of the expropriated land at $1,300,000 for Rainbow Park, has been adjourned to April 2, 2012 from January 9, 2012.  Funding of this liability has been considered but no specific amount has been set out in the current financial plan. Young Anderson continues to represent the RMOW in this case as the hearing is a continuation of the trial.

January 12, 2012 – A small unit of employees applied for a "Variance of Certification" to join CUPE Local 2010.  A vote was held on Thursday, January 12, 2012.  The result of the vote was to not join CUPE local 2010. Currently, 25 RMOW employees are represented by CUPE Local 2010 including the Wastewater Treatment Plant (certified in 1997) and Utilities (certified in 2006) departments. Historically, the Bylaw department was represented by CUPE but the staff made the decision to decertify in 2006.

January 19, 2012 - On behalf of the council and staff of the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the community of Whistler, our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah’s family and friends following this tragic loss.

Along with her accomplishments on the slopes, Sarah will also be remembered for her efforts to make half pipe skiing an official Olympic event.

Sarah will always be recognized as a pioneer in her sport of freestyle skiing and a legend to all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Following more than a year of extensive discussion and debate about the presence and zoning of the Whistler Aggregates asphalt plant in Whistler, Whistler Council issued an order to Whistler Aggregates to cease and desist operating the plant by May 13, 2011. Shortly thereafter, the plant was operating contrary to the direction from Council, despite Alpine having had a reasonable notice period during which to relocate its portable asphalt plant. It has been operating intermittently since that time and the RMOW has been monitoring activity and logging comments from the public.

The RMOW and Rainbow Country Estates Ltd. (Rainbow) have been involved in a dispute arising out of the evaluation of the Rainbow property that had been expropriated by the RMOW in 1987. The RMOW had worked with its solicitors from 1987 to 2009 on the various proceedings in this matter.

We want to acknowledge everyone that has expressed concern about the reports of the sled dog incident that allegedly took place outside of the Whistler municipal boundaries in April 2010. We know that our local community, visitors, and many others have an ongoing interest in these allegations and in particular, the recommendations brought forward by the Province’s Sled Dog Task Force.

Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Council and staff are shocked and saddened by the reports of sled dog culling that allegedly took place outside of the Whistler municipal boundaries in April 2010. We were made aware of the allegations on Monday, January 31. Since then, this has generated a massive response from our local community, visitors, and many others. On behalf of Council and staff I want to acknowledge everyone that has expressed concern around this tragic and serious issue.
