The RMOW and Whistler2020

A shared vision means we’re all looking in the same direction and when we are pulling in the same direction, a lot gets done.

The Whistler2020 Vision:

Whistler will be the premier mountain resort community – as we move toward sustainability

What is Whistler 2020?

Whistler2020 encompasses: a shared vision for the community, a way to move toward that vision as well as a program that monitors the journey toward that vision.

In 2005, Whistler residents formed Whistler2020 and the resort community’s journey toward sustainability began. Years later, 54 Whistler businesses and organizations, including the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), have signed Whistler2020 partner agreements, committing to work cooperatively to achieve our community’s priorities and vision.

Created by the community, Whistler2020 re-imagines Whistler as a sustainable, low-footprint community. The Whistler2020 document sets out how Whistler will achieve its vision, through 17 strategies and ongoing community-developed actions and descriptions of success.

For the RMOW, Whistler2020 is more than a document, it’s a foundation. The municipality considers Whistler2020 in every decision and initiative. It is a guides policy-making for this organization.

How is progress monitored?

Facilitated by the RMOW, Whistler2020 is the community’s comprehensive sustainability plan. For it to be truly effective, it needs to be both supported and implemented by the community. The Whistler Centre for Sustainability, under RMOW direction, facilitates action planning. The creativity, direction and execution of the plan is a product of the ongoing dedication and commitment of Whistler2020 Partners, community action planners and the many businesses and organizations that have signed partner agreements.

A journey toward success

Whistler is working towards its descriptions of success, outlined in Whistler2020, through task force action planning and implementation. Task forces convene annually to prioritize strategic actions to move the community towards its vision.

Each task force reviews the results of previously proposed actions to assess current trends and issues, and propose and prioritize strategic action plans for upcoming years.

This process ensures that Whistler continues its journey toward sustainability. It also ensures  Whistler2020 is a 'living' plan, informed and updated by engaged community members.
