Whistler will be the premier mountain resort community – as we move toward sustainability
What is Whistler 2020?
Whistler2020 is Whistler’s integrated community sustainability plan, highest level policy document, and vision. Whistler2020 is the community’s shared vision and plan for continued success to the year 2020 - an ambitious step on a longer journey to a sustainable future.
Whistler2020 frames community decision-making and re-imagines Whistler as a sustainable, low-footprint community. The document outlines how Whistler will achieve its vision through 17 strategies and ongoing community-developed actions and descriptions of success.
Whistler2020 informs decision-making, optimizes use of limited resources and provides a framework for aligning community efforts in a common direction.
The Whistler2020 vision and annual action planning are informed and supported by an annual performance monitoring and reporting system that tracks more than 90 indicators that measure progress towards sustainability.
One component of the annual monitoring program is the Community Life Tracking Survey.
Results of the annual monitoring program can be found at www.whistler2020.ca.
The community vision articulated in Whistler2020 is organized around five priorities:
- Enriching Community Life
- Enhancing the Resort Experience
- Ensuring Economic Viability
- Protecting the Environment
- Partnering for Success
These priorities form the foundation of the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s work, and the corporate goals and strategies in the RMOW Corporate Plan are aligned with these priorities.
Whistler2020 and The Natural Step
The Whistler2020 Vision is premised on an internationally recognized, science-based definition of sustainability – The Natural Step (TNS).
This definition of sustainability provides the foundation for the 17 strategy areas in the Whistler2020 plan. Whistler’s sustainability objectives guide both short-term decision-making and long-term planning across Whistler, and across RMOW corporate operations.
Whistler understands that sustainability is not just about the environment – it is about ecological integrity, economic viability and fiscal responsibility, and social equity all interrelated within complex natural and social systems.
Development of Whistler2020
Inspired by Whistler’s natural surroundings and heritage, Whistler has always been visionary and thoughtful about planning.
Building on the resort community's previous five-year vision, Whistler2020 was developed in four phases over three years of consultation and community collaboration before it was adopted in 2005.
- During Phase 1, 'success factors' were identified.
- In Phase 2, five alternative futures were explored and assessed by the community.
- Phase 3 involved crafting a preferred future and developing the draft plan with the involvement of sixteen community task forces.
- In Phase 4, the preferred future was transformed into the Whistler2020 vision, and the 17 strategies were completed with ongoing action-planning by the strategy task forces and the involvement and commitment of a broad spectrum of organizations throughout the community.
