Curbside garbage pick-up is not provided in Whistler, because open garbage causes significant problems for wildlife in our community. Many of our residents are only here on weekends, and curbside collection is significantly more expensive than our current depot system.
Residents are able to drop off garbage, recycling and compost at the following depots, which are maintained by a contractor on behalf of the RMOW:
1. Function Junction Depot -1001 Lynham Road
2. Nesters Depot - 8010 Nesters Road
Note: Changes are coming to Whistler's depots on May 19, 2014
Whistler residents and visitors can expect to see changes to Whistler’s depot sites at Function Junction and Nester’s starting May 19, 2014, including an onsite attendant, hours of operation, and additional recycling options.
The following items are not accepted at the depot sites and must be taken to the Waste Transfer Station in the Callaghan Valley:
- Construction waste
- Yard waste and brush
- Large items, including furniture and mattresses
- Commercial waste
Do not leave items outside the bins. Fines up to $2,000 are enforced for illegal dumping as per RMOW Bylaw 1445,1999. Please report incidents of illegal dumping to the RMOW at 604-932-5535.
Garbage Disposal and Wildlife Attractants Bylaw
To limit human-bear conflict, a Garbage Disposal and Wildlife Attractants Bylaw has been adopted by Whistler Council. This bylaw provides definitions for wildlife attractants and imposes fines for improper storage, disposal, or dumping of garbage. Garbage and recycling must be stored indoors or in an approved wildlife resistant container or wildlife resistant storage area at all times.
Commercial businesses and accommodations must hire a private contractor to provide garbage, recycling, and composting collection services.
