Sustainable Event Venue
Whistler has a community vision to be the premier mountain resort community -as we move toward sustainability and the Whistler Olympic Plaza plays a key role in realizing that vision.
Whistler 2020, created in consultation with the community, outlines a vision for financial viability that respects the town’s natural environment and sense of community, which is why every event at the Whistler Olympic Plaza needs to be as sustainable as possible.
The RMOW supports third-party events with effective recycling and waste management strategies and specific site restoration guidelines.
Sustainable event standards
Creating a sustainable event is possible. The newly developed Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standards, a leading standards-based solutions organization, recently created set of standards for use by event organizers seeking to plan and execute sustainable events.
The standard was built on the work of The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) and the VANOC Sustainability Management and Reporting System (SMRS) and the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology's (AISTS) Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit - a collaboration with VANOC.
The CSA Z2010 Requirements, which are included in the CSA Standards supports the Whistler 2020 vision by addressing essential issues of economic and social sustainability, such as labour practices, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement. Integrating management and sustainability practices, the CSA standard is a practical application for events of all types, from major sporting events to festivals and concerts.
Whistler Olympic Plaza is a physical reminder of the community’s commitment to sustainability, incorporating both green materials and environmentally friendly building practices. Equal parts family-friendly community amenity and high-tech event venue — it’s a space designed to maximize diverse usage. In other words, The Plaza is sustainable.
Whistler Olympic Plaza, let the future begin.
