Whistler Olympic Plaza Official Opening On August 27, 2011, the Resort Municipality of Whistler officially opened Whistler Olympic Plaza, one of the most technically-sophisticated outdoor venues in Canada, showcasing a well-known roster of talented performers. For the first time, the stage, framed by the spectacular Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, was set in the new pavilion with free concerts by Juno Award-winning Sam Roberts Band and Canadian alt-country star, Kathleen Edwards. Juno Award-winning artist Jully Black hosted the evening as entertainers and special guests shared stories of Whistler Olympic Plaza.
Story of Whistler Olympic Plaza Whistler Olympic Plaza is the site where the best athletes in the world stepped up to the podium at Victory Ceremonies during the 2010 Winter Games and where the Paralympic Closing Ceremony concluded Whistler's role as Host Mountain Resort. From the early '80s, Whistler visionaries designated this land as community space, and today, Whistler Olympic Plaza is consistent with the community's vision.
RMOW Alex and Myrtle Philip Centuries before the occasional trapper or logger built a cozy cabin in the nineteenth century, the Squamish and Lil'wat First Nations used the secluded Whistler valley for hunting and gathering.  It wasn't until 1914 that Alex and Myrtle Philip opened Rainbow Lodge, a fishing and holiday camp. Later that year, the Great Pacific Northwestern railway pushed through the valley en route to Prince George. Located 140 kilometres north of Vancouver, today, some consider Whistler a "global village"; a small mountain community with an international feel. A place where one can hike and ride rugged trails by day and experience fine cuisine and clubs by night. A place where people from all ages and backgrounds - with a common sense of adventure - brush shoulders on the mountain and in the village.
