Inspired by Whistler's natural surroundings and heritage, the community has always been visionary and thoughtful about planning.
In 2005, Whistler introduced a groundbreaking vision and sustainability plan, Whistler 2020 - Moving Toward a Sustainable Future. It is a comprehensive civic sustainability plan crafted by the community itself, which is inclusive of all aspects of success from economic to environment and everything in between.
That same year, and as a result of Whistler's innovation, Whistler was declared one of the most liveable communities in the world and the best in the world in planning for the future—at the UN-endorsed International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom) in La Coruna, Spain.
Whistler 2020 reimagines the resort community as a fully sustainable, very low-footprint community and spells out an ambitious—yet practical—agenda to make it so.
The vision is that Whistler will be the premier mountain resort community—as we move toward sustainability.
The goals outline how Whistler will achieve its vision through community-developed actions and descriptions of success. Whistler2020 informs decision-making, optimizes use of limited resources, and provides a framework for aligning community efforts in a common direction.
Nearly a decade later, Whistler 2020 is still the community's highest-level policy document and vision.
What's more, Whistler 2020 isn't an end-point; the larger goal is Whistler 2060, where the resort community is fully sustainable.
