A vibrant community tradition

For nearly thirty years, the Lamppost Banner program has been a shining example of how art and local culture can intertwine to enrich public spaces. Each year, artists from near and far submit proposals, vying for the chance to see their designs brighten up Whistler’s streets.

The chosen designs are selected through an anonymous voting process and are displayed for two six-month seasons for a total of 12 months. Awarded artists receive a commission for their creative efforts. Following the second season of display, the banners are made available for purchase, with the proceeds going towards future public art initiatives.

The lamppost banners are a part of our public art program funded by the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) and managed by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.

Spotlight on the latest design: “Here Comes the Sun”

The newest addition to Whistler’s lamppost banner collection is “Here Comes the Sun,” a vibrant and joyful piece by Pri Saboia. Inspired by the phrase, “Come for the winter, stay for the summer,” this design captures the essence of Whistler’s seasonal transformation. The arrival of spring heralds a burst of colours and the anticipation of summer days filled with outdoor adventures. Through this artwork, Pri aims to reflect the fun energy of summer, adding a colourful layer to the town’s natural beauty.

Pri’s design is not only visually striking but also carries a meaningful story. It incorporates repurposed materials, such as stamps made from potatoes and tree toys from the Re-Use It Centre, a 1970s rainbow sticker from her mother and upcycled denim fabric for the background. These elements blend to create composition that is both fun and reflective of a sustainable approach to art.
