The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is inviting qualified engineering consultant Proponents to provide proposals for the inspection and maintenance of the Fitzsimmons Creek Debris Barrier (FDB).
Creek hazards associated with Fitzsimmons Creek have been recognized since the initial construction of Whistler Village (with flood control works) in the late 1970s. Since that time, the understanding regarding the spectrum of natural hazards possible at Fitzsimmons Creek has grown substantially.
In addition to clear-water floods, detailed studies have concluded that Fitzsimmons Creek is subject to periodic large debris flows. Such an event occurred most recently in August 1991.
The RMOW manages Fitzsimmons Creek through the maintenance of flood protection works and in-stream gravel removals to provide protection from floods and debris flows. As part of the ongoing management strategy, the RMOW has constructed a debris barrier to provide additional protection from debris floods. The location of the debris barrier is shown in Section 10.
