Whistler’s Council presented three Civic Service Awards to recognize Michael Hutchison, Murray Lunn and Sharon Schrul for their volunteer contributions on Council committees and boards. This is the fourth year that Civic Service Awards were presented to acknowledge Council committee and board volunteers for their achievements and service to the Whistler community.
Michael Hutchison’s award is for his work on the Mayor’s Task Force on Resident Housing and as the Chair of the Whistler Housing Authority (WHA) Board of Directors. Michael brings perspective from his experience as a private developer, entrepreneur and active community member in the Sea to Sky corridor, to the complex issue of housing Whistler’s workforce. During his tenure, the WHA has created more than 1,800 resident-restricted beds and another four dedicated rental projects will be built in the next four years. Michael’s nomination praised his leadership as instrumental in the WHA becoming one of the most innovative and relevant affordable housing organizations in the Sea-to-sky region and beyond.
Murray Lunn received his award for contributions as Chair of the Recreation Leisure Advisory Committee (RLAC) since its inception in 2012. His role was vital in leading public engagement and working with municipal staff towards the committee’s development of a comprehensive Recreation and Leisure Master Plan that provides guiding direction for Whistler’s municipal parks, trails, lakes and rivers, and recreation programs and facilities. Murray’s nomination describes his commitment to RLAC and his passion for the health and wellbeing of the community. He will be missed upon his retirement from the committee.
Sharon Schrul was awarded for her volunteer contributions to the Whistler Public Library, serving on the Whistler Public Library Board of Trustees and seven years in the Whistler Public Library Materials Management Department. In her role as a trustee, her contributions to the Library’s strategic planning and advocacy efforts and revisions to the Library’s policy manual were instrumental. Sharon’s nomination commended her enthusiasm, commitment and exceptional service to the Library as well as the community.
Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden expressed Council’s gratitude to all current and past committee members. “The work of Council committees and board is invaluable. They provide insightful recommendations to municipal staff and council, with the best interests of the community in mind.”
Michael Hutchison, Murray Lunn and Sharon Schrul are three of more than a hundred volunteers on 16 committees and two boards, who donate their time and expertise to the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
