Municipality to partner with Whistler community groups for plan implementation

Resort Municipality of Whistler Council received the Whistler Age-friendly Assessment and Action Plan Project Final Report was at the December 7 Regular meeting.

With input from the community and stakeholders, the final report summarizes the assessment of the current age-friendly situation in Whistler and provides an action plan to support local older adults to age‐in‐place.

The project and the final report incorporate the eight well-established ‘age-friendly dimensions’ that were first introduced by the World Health Organization. These dimensions consider:

  • Outdoor spaces and buildings;
  • Transportation;
  •  Housing;
  • Respect, social inclusion or cultural safety;
  • Social well-being and participation;
  • Communications and information;
  • Community engagement and employment; and
  • Community support and health and wellness services.

The project’s action plan presents a total of 30 strategies and 71 actions. These strategies and actions are distributed across the eight age-friendly dimensions, while identifying implementation timelines and potential lead organizations for each action.  The final report identifies over 18 community groups who may consider being involved in carrying out the action plan.

“The Age-friendly Assessment and Action Plan is an important tool to support aging-in-place.  What excites me most is the opportunity for the RMOW to learn from, and collaborate with, local advocates, change makers and community groups. In Whistler, we continue to make impactful change when we listen, learn and act together,” said Councillor Cathy Jewett.

In 2020, the Whistler Age-friendly Assessment and Action Plan Project received $24,418 in funding from the Union of B.C. Municipalities Age‐friendly Communities Program which covered 100 percent of the consultant costs.
