The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Council has proclaimed Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1 as BC Culture Days in Whistler. Culture Days is a collaborative, Canada-wide volunteer movement to increase involvement in the arts and cultural life of communities.
In partnership with the Audain Art Museum, Arts Whistler, the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre the Whistler Museum and the Chamber of Commerce, the RMOW encourages residents to come out and enjoy the Cultural Connector, 57 public art installations, and dozens of natural heritage information panels located throughout the community.
Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden is looking forward to enjoying the festivities. “BC Culture Days is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the Cultural Connector. It is an affirmation of Whistler’s increasing reputation for the arts, heritage, and natural history. The amenities are already popular with visitors, and we want residents to explore them as well.”
The Cultural Connector map indicates the walking route, which is reinforced by recent crosswalk paint, banners, and distinctive yellow chairs. Funding for the Cultural Connector was made possible by the Provincial Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI). Investments in the arts, heritage, and natural history will help Whistler achieve the goals outlined in the Whistler Community Cultural Plan. Later this fall, the RMOW, working closely with the Whistler Museum and the Whistler Naturalists, will begin work to refurbish a portion of the 138 existing interpretive panels located across the community.
Cultural planning has been a foundation for success in many tourism destinations including Granville Island, the Okanagan, and Aspen to name a few. From September 29 through October 1, a variety of local artists will be producing live art along the Village portion of the Cultural Connector. The RMOW is also investing in a new public art mural located on the Creekside underpass. Local artist Jessa Gilbert is in the final stages of the work, which is part of the BC Culture Days schedule.
