The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) will launch a new online map tool on Tuesday, November 14 that will provide users with more features and functions than the RMOW’s previous online mapping system. The launch will be followed by a “World GIS Day” celebration and Open House at the Whistler Public Library Wednesday, November 15 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. where residents will have the opportunity to try out the new GIS and take part in GIS-themed activities.
Whistler’s GIS allows the municipality to collect, store, analyze, manage and present local geographical data within a single database.
“The new online Geographic Information System (GIS) provides mapping technology that will give residents, visitors and businesses easier access to municipal database information contained in a mapping format. For example, users will be able to choose to view information such as zoning, hydrology, utilities information and trail detail,” said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. “We are pleased to be able to offer this enhanced tool to our community and look forward to more open data features being offered in the future.”
The new mapping tool can be found at www.whistler.ca/maps. Users will also have access to an online parking map and in the coming weeks, an online map of the snow-cleared sections of the Valley Trail.
The Open House at the library on November 15 will be an opportunity for those who use Whistler’s GIS map for business and GIS enthusiasts to try out the new online map tool and ask questions from staff. An interactive story map session will be offered to students.
