July 11, 2022 – Black bear destroyed in Whistler Village

An adult black bear was destroyed after demonstrating escalating behaviour and posing a significant risk to public safety.

This bear was initially reported on July 5 after gaining access to human food and garbage in Rebagliati Park. The Conservation Officer Service (COS), RMOW and RCMP made multiple attempts to minimize further conflict. Rebagliati Park was closed and signage was posted in the area, a wildlife alert was issued to inform the public and multiple attempts were made to haze the bear. Despite these efforts, the bear’s behaviour continued to escalate and it had been reported bluff charging, approaching people to gain access to food and had made contact with a person.

Residents and visitors are reminded to:

  • Report bear sightings in residential areas by phoning the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277 or 604-905-BEAR. Whistler Conservation Officers are notified daily about sightings and immediately in emergencies. Calling the COS when you first see a bear in your neighbourhood or yard gives the COS more options to manage the bear.
  • Never feed or approach a bear.
  • Always manage garbage, recycling and other attractants so bears can’t access them, at home or in your car.
