The Conservation Officer Service (COS) has received reports of bears entering properties in the Nordic and Alta Vista neighbourhoods.

Temperatures are unseasonably warm right now, but residents and visitors are reminded to close doors and windows when unattended and ensure they are locked. The same applies to vehicles.

Bears are currently in a phase called hyperphagia, which suppresses their natural feeling of satiety. This allows bears to eat continuously to allow for maximum weight gain before hibernation and means they will go to greater lengths to access food sources.

It is crucial attractants are managed correctly on all levels of properties, as bears are also climbing to access decks. Garbage must be securely stored, BBQs and grease traps cleaned, pet food and citronella candles stored inside.

Report sightings of bears around properties to the Conservation Officer Service: 1-877-952-7277.

Residents are asked to report unsecured animal attractants to Bylaw Services by phone: 604-935-8280 or email: bylawservices@whistler.ca.For more information visit: whistler.ca/Bears.
