As a Bear Smart community, Whistler provides extra funding to the Conservation Officer Service (COS) for non-lethal bear management. This year, some of this funding went towards training local RCMP on bear hazing (deterrence) techniques.
A few weeks ago, the Audain Art Museum was hosting an event, and a bear was observed in close proximity to the building. This was a potentially high risk situation with lots of human traffic, confined spaces and no clear exit for the bear.
Museum staff reported this to the COS and RCMP, and RCMP attended and were able to get the bear to safely move away from the area. Early reporting meant that RCMP had time to act to quickly.
Please report all bear sightings in residential areas or the Village by phoning the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277 or 604-905-BEAR. Whistler Conservation Officers are notified daily about sightings and immediately in emergencies.
