Over the past two days there have been five reports of bears in several Whistler neighbourhoods breaking into cars to access garbage. These bears have caused significant damage to vehicles and are a public safety risk. A bear’s sense of smell is 2,100 times more powerful than a human’s, and a hungry bear will break into a car for anything that smells like food, even coffee cups or food wrappers.
It is critical that you remove all garbage and recycling from your vehicle, and lock your doors. Do not tempt bears as their food needs are so high, while they are preparing for hibernation.
Report bear sightings in residential areas by phoning the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277 or 604-905-BEAR for early intervention. Whistler Conservation Officers are notified daily about sightings and immediately in emergencies."
