Whistler’s Green Building Policy (PDF) helps us evaluate development applications to make sure they support sustainable buildings adapted to climate change that reduce:

  • Infrastructure demands and costs
  • Environmental impacts
  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,
  • Long-term building operating costs

The policy establishes performance guidelines organized in six sections:

  • Energy and emissions
  • Building materials
  • Sustainable site design
  • Green mobility
  • Water conservation and rainwater management
  • Solid waste

Each section includes guidelines and targets to achieve the policy’s goals and objectives.

The policy supports goals in our Climate Action Big Moves strategy and Official Community Plan

Does the Green Building Policy apply to my development project?

The policy applies to all new construction and also to applications for rezoning.

Checklist required for rezoning

When you apply for rezoning, you must submit the Green Building Policy Checklist (PDF) and a summary of how your project addresses each section of the policy. You’ll also need to submit the documents and reports listed.

Green building provisions will be registered as a Section 219 covenant on your property as a condition of the rezoning.

Checklist recommended for development permit and building permit applications

We recommend submitting the Green Building Policy Checklist (PDF) to show how your project fits with climate action goals for:

  • Development permit applications involving new multi-family, commercial, or industrial development in all development permit Areas
  • Building permit applications for new single-family dwellings over 325 square metres total floor area.

Green building provisions will not be secured with a covenant for development permits or building permits.
