Five thousand cyclists will pedal 122 kilometres from Vancouver, along the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99), to Whistler,​ for the annual RBC GranFondo Whistler.  

Plan ahead

If you are travelling south from Whistler on Saturday, September 12 and need to arrive in Vancouver or at the airport by a specific time, plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Major delays are expected for all buses, coaches, and passenger vehicles. 

Commuters travelling to Whistler for daytime shifts should plan ahead, expect longer travel times, and anticipate busy parking lots throughout the day. 

Expect traffic delays at the intersection of Callaghan Valley Road and Highway 99. 

Transit routes and bus stops will be affected. See details below for service impacts.

Traffic impacts

Travel impacts 

Expect significant traffic delays south of Whistler Village from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Although Highway 99 will remain open in both directions, travel times may be substantially longer than usual. 

Parking impacts 

Pay parking is available in Day Lots 1, 2, 3 and 5, although lots are expected to fill early in the day. 

Day Lot 4 will be closed September 10 to 12 for event operations. Day Lot 4 and 5 pass holders may use their passes in Day Lots 1, 2, 3 and 5 during the closure. 

Bus and coach parking 

Bus parking in Day Lot 4 will not be available September 10 to 12. Buses and coaches should use available parking on Mons Road, Nesters Road or Spruce Grove. 

Garibaldi Park users 

Visitors accessing Garibaldi Park should use available public parking and pay applicable parking fees. Parking in Day Lot 4 will not be available September 10 to 12. 

Transit impacts 

From 8:20 a.m. to 5 p.m.:  

  • Gondola Transit Exchange – OPEN – Catch buses for Routes 6, 7, 20, 20X, 21, 30, 31, 32 – all routes depart from Gondola Transit Exchange. 
  • Village Gate Boulevard bus stop – CLOSED use Gondola Transit Exchange. 
  • Northlands Boulevard bus stops – CLOSED use Gondola Transit Exchange. 
  • Route 10 northbound – There will be a temporary bus stop at Highway 99 on the north side of Village Gate Boulevard for Route 10 northbound passengers. 
  • Route 20, 21 and 25 passengers will also be able to be dropped off at this stop and walk into Whistler Village. 
  • Route 10 southbound from Whistler Village, use the stop on Highway 99 at the Whistler Golf Course accessed via the Valley Trail under Highway 99 from Whistler Way behind the Conference Centre. 
  • Passengers may only cross the event lane on Highway 99 if helped by a traffic control attendant. 

From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or when barricades are removed):  

  • All bus stops in Cheakamus Crossing – CLOSED. 
  • Catch bus north to Village in Function Junction at stop 102682 on Alpha Lake Road across from Home Hardware. 
  • All bus stops in Nordic – CLOSED. 
  • All bus stops in Spring Creek – CLOSED. 
  • Whistler Creekside bus stops – CLOSED use temporary stops.  

Whistler Creekside temporary stops:  

  • Southbound on Highway 99 just south of Lake Placid Road.  
  • Northbound on Chamonix Crescent at Lake Placid Rd. 

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the following bus stops will be CLOSED: 

  • Highway 99 northbound at Hillcrest (Alta Vista). 
  • Highway 99 northbound at Brio entrance (Brio). 
  • Highway 99 northbound at Panorama Ridge (Brio). 
  • Highway 99 northbound at Spring Creek. 
  • Highway 99 northbound at Alta Lake Road. 
  • Highway 99 northbound at Bayshores.

Highway 99 and Village access 

Expect delays on Highway 99 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m

  • Traffic signals will be flashing in several locations. 
  • Traffic will be stopped intermittently to accommodate the event. 
  • There will be no full highway closures, but delays should be expected throughout the day. 
  • Southbound traffic between Village Gate Boulevard and Callaghan Valley Road can expect additional delays between 8:55 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. 

Village access 

Access to/from Whistler Village will be impacted. 

  • Village Gate Boulevard will be closed to northbound and southbound traffic from Highway 99. 
  • Use Lorimer Road and Whistler Way as alternate routes to access the Village. 
  • Northlands Boulevard at Village Gate Boulevard will operate under traffic control from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Callaghan Valley access

Callaghan Valley Road will be closed to vehicle traffic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

  • The Callaghan Valley Transfer Station will be closed during this time and will not be accessible to the public. 
  • Motorists travelling between Whistler and Callaghan Valley Road should expect delays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 
  • Access to destinations in the area will be affected during event operations. 

More information 

Expect significant delays entering and exiting destinations on the east side of Highway 99 between Function Junction and Village Gate Boulevard from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Traffic will be stopped intermittently at entrances and exits serving businesses, neighbourhoods, and other destinations.
