In Whistler, you need to follow the sign bylaw and apply for a sign permit before installing or displaying any of the following types of signs: 

  • Business display signs or alterations to signs 
  • Sandwich board signs for licensed home-based artist studios 
  • Sandwich board signs for food and beverage establishments only (this is an ongoing pilot project) 
  • Traffic control signs on private property 
  • Special event signs 
  • Election signs 

Home-based artist studios 

Licensed home-based artist studios can are allowed a single fascia sign and also apply to have the following: 

  • one freestanding sign 
  • one sandwich board sign 

Sandwich board signs for restaurants and cafés 

Learn about sandwich board regulations (PDF) until the sign bylaw is updated:

  • Only food and beverage establishments are permitted to use sandwich boards and only one sandwich board is permitted for each establishment  
  • Sandwich boards should be of a high quality and reflect the original intent of handwritten signs, artistic flair and encouraged to highlight daily specials  
  • Position and size parameters:  
    • Sign placement must ensure pedestrians can walk unobstructed including all stairs and ramps  
    • Signs should be in a pre-designated location directly in front of the business frontage, and tight to planter wall/patio edge  
    • Maximum sign size is 0.6m2 including all supporting structure and surrounding framework and the sign shouldn’t exceed 1.5m in height. 

How to apply for a sign permit

Business signs 

  1. Download the sign permit application (PDF)
  2. Submit your completed application via email to planning@whistler.ca 
  3. Include the following: 
    • drawings, photos, and/or diagrams of the proposed signage that show dimensions and clearance to the ground; 
    • written approval for the proposed signage from the strata representative or tenant coordinator; and 
  4. Pay the permit fees. 

Submitting the application form does not guarantee approval. 

Election signs 

  1. Download the election sign permit application (PDF)
  2. Return the completed application to the Planning Department at Municipal Hall.
