The RMOW is considering entering into preliminary conversations with B.C. Parks and the B.C. Mountaineering Club to:
- determine if the Himmelsbach Hut currently located at Russet Lake is available to the RMOW, and
- consider its possible relocation to Mt. Sproatt as an area management working station.
If relocated, the hut would not be open to the public.
Intended uses would be to:
- Establish a mutually beneficial working station for RMOW Alpine Rangers, Recreation Sites and Trails BC staff, BC Conservation Officer Service, biologists, and Whistler Search and Rescue
- Provide information and education to recreation users
Should the hut become available, further work would be required to confirm its condition and to identify a suitable location in terms of bear habitat, bear-human conflict hazard ratings and user proximity. Any proposed relocation would require review and approval from RSTBC.
The intended working station uses are supported in the draft Grizzly Bear-Human Conflict Mitigation Strategy.
