The Black Bear represents a respected animal and symbol from the artist’s Haida culture. As the name suggests, there is a relationship between human and bear.  The person in the bear’s eye refers to a transformation legend.

The sculpture opening was celebrated with a blessing, songs and dance. The artist’s hope was that children would want to play on and around the bear.
