Recreation Trails Strategy
Whistler’s Recreation Trails Strategy guides how we plan and manage more than 400 kilometres of local trails and trail facilities.
The Recreation Trails Strategy vision is for trails to connect people to nature and community, support health and well‑being, and respect the land’s cultural and ecological integrity. The goals include working in partnership with the Líl̓wat Nation and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, protecting sensitive areas, making trails accessible, supporting tourism, and ensuring long‑term funding and responsible use.
The strategy was shaped through three phases of community engagement, including input from local trail groups and ongoing discussions with the Líl̓wat Nation and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw.
The Strategy provides direction for six areas:
- trail management,
- trail access within Whistler,
- environmental care ,
- trail planning and development,
- commercial and event use,
- and monitoring and communication.
The plan shows trail status, maintenance responsibilities and land ownership.
This strategy focuses on spring, summer and fall use of Resort Municipality of Whistler trails, and does not include trails for motorized vehicles (except trials motorcycles), the Whistler Blackcomb Bike Park, Garibaldi Provincial Park or Whistler Olympic Park.
The Recreation Trails Strategy is a living document that will grow and adapt as community needs, the environment, and cultural insights evolve.
