Our goal in our Official Community Plan is to ensure 75 per cent of workers live here in Whistler in livable, appropriate and affordable homes. This reduces emissions and strengthens the community fabric of our beautiful mountain Village.
Whistler has around 3,800 affordable rental and ownership housing units. This housing is a range of developments through Whistler Housing Authority (WHA) as well as private rental and ownership housing. This includes:
- 375: WHA rental units
- 987: WHA owner-occupied units
- 1,258: Employee rental units
- 1,191: Employee ownership units
- 50: Whistler Valley Housing Society rental units
From 2019 to 2025, 745 new bed units of employee housing were created through the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s subsidiaries Whistler 2020 Development Corporation (WDC) and the WHA.
The province collects Municipal and Regional District Tax (MRDT), sometimes called Hotel Tax, on tourist rentals listed on online accommodation providers. A portion of this tax funds developing new affordable housing in Whistler. In 2023, $2.97 million was invested in Whistler’s affordable housing from MRDT, which included $2 million from tourism rental revenue.
