Black Bear or Grizzly Bear?

There are two bear species found in the Whistler region: black bears (ursus americanus) and grizzly bears (ursos arctos). 

Whistler is home to both black bears and grizzly bears, and it’s often difficult to tell them apart. Black bears are more likely to become habituated and act comfortably around humans, so you may see them in yards and parks around Whistler.

Black bears can range in colour from black, blue-black, dark brown, brown and cinnamon to even white. Grizzlies, likewise, can range in colour from black to blonde. Grizzly bears are usually significantly larger than black bears, but size is not the best way of differentiating the species. The following are differentiating features:
