Goal: By 2030, Whistler demonstrates leadership in redefining tourism in a low-carbon world.
Whistler hosts roughly three million tourists every year. As we welcome visitors to our beautiful community, it’s important to remember the impact travel has on our planet. Visitor Greenhouse Gas emissions outweigh those of residents, a challenge shared by the global tourism industry. As a leading mountain destination, we recognize our responsibility to lower the impacts of our tourism economy. We can reimagine how people access and experience Whistler and work towards a future where tourism and climate leadership are connected.
What we’re doing
- Work with partners to develop and market Whistler as a low-carbon destination.
- Promote Whistler businesses leading on climate action.
- Partner with resort organizations to promote longer stays and fewer trips.
- Partner with resort organizations and regional partners to promote alternatives to personal vehicles travelling to and within Whistler.
- Partner with car rental agencies to make electric vehicles available to visitors.
- Partner with resort organizations to encourage emissions offset programs.
Small actions you can take
- Choose low-carbon travel. Take a bus, shuttle, or train where possible instead of driving solo.
- Explore by foot, bike, or transit while visiting. Whistler’s pedestrian-friendly village and extensive Valley Trail make this easy and fun.
- If you need to rent a vehicle, look for electric or hybrid options.
- Stay a little longer: Extend your stay to reduce the frequency of travel and make the most of your time here.
- Offset your trip. Contribute to a carbon offset program to balance out your travel emissions.
- Support sustainable businesses. Look for local shops and restaurants that prioritize climate-friendly practices.
