On shared unceded L̓il̓wat7úl and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory

The Conservation Officer Service (COS) has received a report of a Black Bear accessing barbecues and other attractants in the Emerald neighbourhood in Whistler.

Whistler’s bears are awake and actively searching for food. With few natural early-season food sources, bears are more likely to be drawn into residential neighbourhoods and will investigate anything with a scent.  Bears are especially vulnerable during this time so it is critical that community members are vigilant in managing attractants:

  • Burn barbecues clean, empty grease traps and remove any remnant grease or food scraps after every use.
  • Store all garbage, recycling and compost in a secure building (not on your deck or in your vehicle).
  • Remove all bird feeders.
  • Never feed a bear.

It is important to report bear sightings in residential areas by phoning the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277. Early reporting allows the COS to intervene before a bear becomes habituated, and allows them to shepherd the bear back into the wild.

Please share this messaging with your friends and neighbours so we can help keep our bears safe and wild.
