The Conservation Officer Service is advising the public to keep dogs on leash following multiple reports of coyote activity near Rainbow Park.
At this time of year coyotes may become more defensive and “escort” people or pets away from their dens or pups. If you encounter a coyote follow these steps:
- Stay calm and do not run
- Keep your dog on a short leash at your side
- Pickup small children or dogs
- Calmly back away while maintaining eye contact.
The Coyote will stop following you once you are out of it’s territory. If the coyote comes too close or acts defensively (signs include growling or lunging) shout and wave your arms. Then, back away slowly while making loud noises.
