On shared unceded L̓il̓wat7úl and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory

Saturday, July 26: The Conservation Officer Service (COS) has shared this alert after a coyote bit an off-leash dog on the Hot Dog Alley mountain bike trail, near Rainbow Park and the Stonebridge neighbourhood on July 23.

The COS reminds dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash and avoid the Hot Dog Alley trail until the coyote family has left the area.

Coyotes may become more aggressive towards people or pets at this time of year when when they are protecting dens or pups. Coyotes may follow or attempt to “escort” you and your dog away from their pups. The public is advised to avoid the trail at this time to give the coyotes space.

If you encounter a coyote, follow these safety tips:

  • Stay calm.
  • Keep your dog on a leash by your side. Pick up any small children or dogs.
  • Maintain a safe distance and calmly back away from the coyote. The coyote will leave when you’re out of their territory. Don’t run.
  • If a coyote gets too close, shout and wave your arms to scare it away.

Keep your dog leashed on any trail because dogs can trigger defensive behaviour from wildlife. For more wildlife safety tips, visit the WildSafeBC website.
