Imagining a future where waste is kept out of the landfill

That’s the goal of Whistler’s Zero Waste Action Plan. We have some work to do to reach zero waste as a community and we need your help. In 2020, we sent 11,607 tonnes of waste to the landfill, which was a record low. However, these changes were due to COVID-19 and volumes increased again after. It’s clear we need to keep finding ways to permanently reduce the amount of waste we create.

Let’s disrupt our habits, reduce our waste and love this place.

Reduce and reuse — then recycle

Reducing waste doesn’t have to be complicated. Using simple steps, we can all reduce, reuse, recycle and compost most of the waste we produce. Find tips to reduce waste at home.

What is zero waste?

As outlined in the Official Community Plan, zero waste is a goal to guide people to change their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use. Zero waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.
