Bayly Park

Bayly Park site sits overtop of Whistler’s former municipal landfill. The landfill was closed in 2006 as part of development of the 2010 Games Athletes Village, now Cheakamus Crossing.

Earlier this year Municipal Council directed staff to develop an affordable and “right sized” neighbourhood park for the site, where the remaining lands would be held in reserve for future park needs. In March 2011, Council approved a conceptual park development plan and all-inclusive budget of $1,470,000.

On August 3, 2011, the RMOW held a public open house where neighbours and the community come out to learn about park development plans, budget and schedule. The feedback received was generally positive.

Proposed amenities at Bayly Park include:

  • Space for community garden opportunities provided by the Whistler Community Services Society (WCSS)
  • Public washroom facilities
  • An all-weather gravel soccer field, permitting spring and autumn practice opportunities
  • Greening up the site with non-irrigated grasses and trees
  • Sea-to-Sky Trail connection from an existing terminus on one side of the park to the existing Valley Trail network on the other side
  • Two sand volleyball courts
  • Picnic tables, benches, drinking fountain, and way finding signage
  • Sizeable portion reserved for future neighbourhood and community uses

Subject to weather, approvals, and acceptable tender results, work is scheduled to be completed in 2012. Work was delayed in 2011 due to supply issues for the necessary fill materials and additional settlement information gathering about the closed landfill’s membrane. These issues were resolved in September and October 2011 respectfully and site work is now scheduled to commence in the spring of 2012.

Spring 2012

  • Fill materials and rough grading to achieve grades
  • Site servicing (water and electrical supply, sanitary & storm sewers)
  • Foundations for play structures, washroom & picnic pavilion
  • Gravel soccer field, tennis, basketball, and ball hockey courts
  • Play structures and safety surfacing, washrooms, picnic pavilion
  • Sand Volleyball, WCSS Community Gardening
  • Grass seeding and finishing. Grass useable summer 2013
  • Other greening up

Residents can expect to start using the park next summer.
