Leader. Educator. Cultural steward. Father. Husband. Neighbour. Friend. Skalulmecw Chief Dean Nelson wears a lot of different hats as the Political Chief of the Líl̓wat Nation, a role that goes far beyond mere governance. A thoughtful, passionate community leader, much of Nelson’s work happens behind the scenes, away from the public eye.

In the first episode of Season 4 of The Whistler Podcast, listeners get a rare chance to hear directly from Nelson and learn more about his role as a political and community leader and advocate for positive change.

From economic development to cultural revitalization, from partnerships with the broader Sea to Sky community to reflections on Reconciliation, Chief Nelson offers insight into the deep responsibilities Indigenous government carry. In this wide-ranging conversation with Whistler Mayor Jack Crompton, Nelson also shares stories about working towards Indigenous-led events like The Invictus Games, his recent meeting with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and memories from his early days as an educator and mentor.
