Fibre Optic Network

One of the legacies of the 2010 Winter Games was the installation of 286 kilometres of fibre optic cable from Vancouver to Whistler, resulting in improved telephone, television and digital services for Whistler residents.

Additional fibre optic cable was also installed in Whistler Village to add permanent capacity for broadcast and event services.

Fibre Optic Line for Broadcasters

Fibre optic cabling throughout the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) allows instant transmission of high definition (HD) signals to any location at any time.

Broadcasters can tape live broadcasts from 14 different locations including Village Square, Skiers Plaza and Whistler Olympic Plaza directly to their studios without using a satellite truck.

The fibre optic cable links all performance areas at Whistler Olympic Plaza and also connects to the network that runs through Whistler Village. The cable links the plaza to other Village gathering spaces and the Whistler Conference Centre, and allows broadcasting of an event at the plaza throughout the Village Stroll.

Booking the Fibre Optic Cable

The RMOW manages the various locations where fibre optic feeds are available.

  • The broadcaster is responsible for making arrangements with Bell to reserve the facilities from Whistler to Vancouver or another destination.
  • The RMOW handles the connection in Whistler.
  • Broadcasters can either request one feed at a time from Whistler or the installation of additional simultaneous feeds.
