Informal trails in Pine Point Park have created significant wear along the waterfront and at viewpoints. Planned park, trail, and waterfront improvements will help to improve environmental protection and rehabilitation.
The vision for the improvements is a natural area park, to be enjoyed by responsible park users who leave nothing but footprints behind.
Trails
The proposed trail improvements include construction of approximately 375 metres of trail using some of the existing unofficial trails while decommissioning others. The trails will connect to the waterfront and viewpoint, guiding park users away from adjacent private property, while better protecting environmental values.
Some of the trails will be 1.5 metres wide, made by machine with a natural or crushed gravel surface, while others will built by hand to create a 1 metre wide trail with a natural surface.
In the future, a portion of one trail that roughly parallels the railway right of way would be upgraded to a Valley Trail as part of the Alpha Lake Valley Trail project.
Waterfront access
The vision for waterfront improvements includes two swimming floats, a floating dock and an access ramp attached to a concrete abutment above the top of the bank.
Other improvements
Select trees will have limbs removed, however no significant tree removal is expected. Trees posing a hazard to public safety will be trimmed to provide natural habitat.
Additional improvements include:
- relocating the existing boat storage and bike racks;
- installing educational and environmental awareness signs;
- adding two park benches;
- install split rail wood fencing to define environmentally sensitive areas and adjacent private property;
- rehabilitate previously disturbed areas.
Timeline
The project is currently being reviewed for a Development Permit. Once approved, the goal is to complete the on-land improvements in autumn 2024.
The waterfront and lake access improvements would occur following provincial Crown Land Tenure approval, likely in 2025.
Funding
This project is 100 per cent funded by the Province of BC’s Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI).
